This one day Conference is for Facilities and Hotel Services Managers who are responsible for the indirect management and operation of Linen Services and for those Managers who have a responsibility for the contracting out of Linen and Laundry Services.

The implications associated with the introduction of "BEST VALUE" and the requirement to identify Trust-wide Strategies and Out Put Specifications for Linen Services will be covered at this conference.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

GRAHAM HAGUE (Chairman)
Operations Facilities Manager,
Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Community Health Services NHS Trust
Graham has been in the NHS for many years, and has always led the way in Developing Catering Services within the hospitals in which he has worked. He is a past University External Examiner and his hard work was recognised when he was awarded Cost Sector Health Care Manager of the Year for 1995. More recently, Graham has been involved in the build up to the Audit, and has been one of the Catering Members of the team that helped to develop the Audit Parameters ensuring that it is relevant to NHS Catering. Graham is also an active member of the North West NHS Facilities Management Training Advisory Group and the North West NHS Hotel Services Training Advisory Group.

ALASTAIR CAMPBELL,
Laundry Services Adviser, Central Services Agency, 25-27 Adelaide Street, Belfast.
Alastair Campbell is Laundry Services Adviser at the Central Services Agency in Belfast. He was educated at Aberdeen University where he studied Natural Philosophy and subsequently at Derby College of Technology where he was awarded the 1973 Giltbrook Prize in Advanced Laundry and Dry Cleaning Technology. He subsequently worked for Prudhoe and Monkton HMC as Laundry Manager before being appointed as Linen Services Manager to York Health District in 1975. During the last four years of this appointment he acted as part-time Laundry Adviser to the Yorkshire Regional Health Authority before taking up his present advisory position with the Central Services Agency in 1982. The Central Services Agency's Laundry Services Adviser is responsible for providing advice and assistance to the Health and Personal Social Services Trusts and Health and Social Services Boards. He is also responsible for advising the Department of Health and Social Services and the Management Executive in Northern Ireland on matters relating to policy. In addition to this, the Adviser carried out a number of Consultancy assignments within the United Kingdom and other European countries, both within the private and public sectors. Alastair has led quality initiatives within the Central Services Agency and is a qualified Lead Assessor for ISO 9000 and the European Foundation for Quality Model. He is also the External Verifier for National Vocational Qualifications within the laundry and dry cleaning industries in Ireland. During the last 18 years, the adviser has been deeply involved with all of the major NHS Health and Social Services Trusts in Northern Ireland as they have undertaken the process of Competitive Tendering in the continuing process of seeking best value for money. In the light of the experience gained the Adviser has developed a number of procedures and protocols which have proved robust enough to withstand challenge yet which allow the process to proceed as quickly as possible to a satisfactory conclusion.

TREVOR BARTON,
Facilities Manager, Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, Hope Hospital, Stott Lane, Salford Manchester.
Trevor has over 30 years experience in the National Health Service. Originally in Catering Management, he now heads up the quality monitoring team and has been instrumental in developing the monitoring and management information systems across all facilities disciplines at Salford. Salford is the leading Trust in the introduction of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) and Trevor's systems enable the facilities directorate to have involvement in the Trust's programme. Trevor is an active member of the Society of Linen Services and Laundry Managers.

IAN HARGREAVES,
Linen Services Manager, FYLDE LINEN SERVICES, Blackpool Victoria Hospital NHS Trust, Victoria Hospital, Whinney Heys Road, Blackpool.
Ian commenced working in the NHS as a Regionally appointed trainee and is an ex-graduate of Derby College. He is the current National President of the Society of Hospital Linen Service & Laundry Managers whose aims and objectives he represents in meetings with NHS Executive, BSI and other related organisations. He is a practising "Laundry Manager" and likes to think of himself as Gamekeeper turned Poacher, as much of his work is undertaken in the Commercial Sector.
