FM TAG Review:

The Medical Perspective in Facilities Management

Tuesday - 7th March, 2000

Jarvis International Hotel, Blackrod, Bolton.

On a cold, wet March morning, 29 delegates gathered together at the Jarvis International Hotel, Bolton to hear leading clinicians give a "no punches pulled" account of some of the problems that face them in the NHS.

Spirits were immediately lifted when the Chairman for the day, Dr. Robert Aston, gave an extremely interesting and light hearted talk on "Medicines greatest achievement - Immunisation". One delegate commented after the Conference that "his talk was interesting, both professionally and as a mother, he gave a total insight and broke down many myths about diseases".

Dr. Ian Rutter then continued in the same vein and gave us some inspiration to progress with multi-agency working and developing technology.

Steve Freeborn talked about problems faced by Pharmacists in a major Acute Hospital. He raised the profile of his department and broke down barriers.

Dr. Kevin Jones, as many people who have heard him know, is a brilliant after dinner speaker. Well it turns out that he is just as good when talking about the much more serious topic of his organisation of hospital Lung Cancer services. A comment on the Conference Education Questionnaire read - "excellent - all F.M. staff should receive this lecture".

Other topics covered were "Food Glorious Food" and "Aspects of a Modern Imaging Department" by Elizabeth Jones and Stewart Whitley respectively, both of which were well received by the audience.

Overall the Conference was a huge success. It was light hearted but gave an invaluable insight into important clinical issues.

Those delegates who attended were fortunate indeed.
