Legionella is recognised as a high risk category within the Healthcare environment and as such demands management control policies to change in response to new findings relating to exposure.
Legionella appears to be mutating after the discovery of the bacteria in temperatures above 50°C, it also seems to becoming resistant to certain biocides. Recently Legionella has been in the news when the bacterium was discovered in compost heaps; car windscreens wash bottles and dental practices. Within the UK it is estimated 9,000 people contract Legionnaire’s disease each year, which are very worrying statistics for healthcare establishments who, by their very nature, have vulnerable patients and visitors in plentiful supply.
Legionella pneumophila is now probably the most recognisable water related pathogen within healthcare establishments. However, there are other water-borne infections within hospitals that share remarkable similarities. Pseudomonas is such a pathogen in particular the Pseudomonas Aeruginosa strain, like Legionella it is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause a wide range of infections. It is the leading cause of illness in patients that are immunocompromised.
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa can survive in distilled water and is frequently found in whirlpools and hot tubs, the two main routes of infection from contaminated water are skin contact, and lung exposure from inhaling aerosols. It is also relatively resistant to many antibiotics.
The department of health recently issued an alert regarding Pseudomonas, which raised more questions than answers. So, is resistance futile? This conference aims to inform the audience of the dangers of Pseudomonas and how to best protect our patients and staff from this pathogen and will also give an invaluable update on many new changes in Legionella control and legislation.

Harry is a chartered professional with over 25 years experience incorporating the design and maintenance of commercial and industrial premises. Harry has worked for the NHS since 2000 initially starting within the capital department of Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust before taking up his present role as Head of Operational Estates. Harry started his career as an electrician, before diversifying into building and engineering services. Over the years he has gained qualifications, expertise and experience of a wide range of building and engineering services.

Dr Makin has been actively involved in diagnostic Medical Microbiology for 40 years. He was the Directorate Manager of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospitals for over 25 years and left in March 2010 to run his Consultancy. Dr Makin has researched extensively into environmental aspects of Legionnaires’ disease. He has published several papers on this topic and has presented many lectures on legionella both nationally and internationally. Dr Makin is a co-author of the HSE ACOP (L8) on the Control of Legionella in water systems, and also of HTM 04-01 which provides guidance on the control of legionella bacteria in healthcare premises. He is a member of the working party that is currently updating this document. Dr Makin has advised many NHS Trusts throughout the UK on the control of legionella bacteria, Pseudomonas, and other micro-organisms in their water systems. He managed a 3-year study for the Department of Health which was the first to evaluate the efficacy of chlorine dioxide in controlling legionellae and biofilm in hot and cold water systems. This took place in a hospital where an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease had occurred. Dr Makin has also advised government agencies and municipalities in other countries, the UK Ministry of Defence, Metropolitan/Borough Councils, various large manufacturing companies, hotel chains, cruise lines, and others, on legionella risks and their control. He has served as an expert witness in a number of court cases regarding outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease, including the Barrow, Hereford, Glastonbury, and Cardiff outbreaks.

Previously Consultant State Registered Clinical Microbiologist and Director, Health Protection Agency London Regional Food, Water & Environmental. As a Public Health Microbiologist and Consultant and Advisor with over 27 years experience in clinical and food and water public health microbiology she has advised hospital infection control teams and engineers, health protection units; local and port health authorities, on the management and control of water systems particularly in recreational water systems, and water hygiene in the healthcare environment. Susanne has acquired extensive practical experience in the investigation of water management problems and in the epidemiology, ecology, and control in of the water quality in various water systems including hot and cold water systems; hydrotherapy pools; endoscope washers; dialysis units etc. For her PhD she researched the interactions of Legionella and other microorganisms in water system biofilms and since then has devoted of her time in investigating water hygiene problems due to legionellae and other waterborne clinically significant micro-organisms such as, pseudomonads mycobacteria; helicobacter etc. She has also been involved in the investigation of waterborne nosocomial cases and outbreaks in over 30 hospitals often working closely with the HSE. As a consequence she has built up extensive experience of independent auditing of Legionella risk assessments for hospitals and other large buildings. She has contributed to many working groups both nationally and internationally to produce legislation and guidelines for water quality standards, microbiological methods and risk assessment including the revision of Part G of the building regulations and BS 7592 Sampling for Legionella and BS 8580 Risk assessments for Legionella control – Code of practice, and was an author editor of the World Health Organisations’ “Legionella and the prevention of legionellosis” and “Water Safety in Buildings” which was published in 2011. She has also developed and delivered over 100 successful training courses for professional staff including medical staff, epidemiologists, microbiologists, local authority environmental and port health officers, hospital engineers on water management and control of water microbiology; sampling and investigation of contamination events, incidents and outbreaks. She is currently co-chair of the International Forum for Water Hygiene in Buildings producing recommendations for water quality in healthcare buildings including for equipment used in the hospital environment presented on behalf of IFOWAHB at the European Working Group for Legionella Infections in Copenhagen 2010 and at the Hospital Infection Society Meeting in Liverpool 2010. She also represents the Royal Society of Public Health on both the British Standards Institute and the International Standards Organisation’s working groups responsible for the production of microbiological methods related to water quality and also the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group.

With a strong product marketing background, Stephanie is ideally placed to translate the needs of users and specifiers in the health sector to deliver innovative product/service solutions and – as a result – spends a great deal of time interacting with healthcare specialists. This focused specialism means Rada, the commercial division of Kohler Mira, is ideally set to push the boundaries of product design in an area of significant importance to all. Stephanie joined Kohler Mira nine years ago and has played a pivotal role in the growth of a new business category for the company. She is a business-to-business marketing specialist and is currently working as Product Manager for the Rada brand, specifically digital and electronic products. Stephanie is also a Biology honours graduate of the University of Exeter (1994).
EOIN McQUONE

Eoin McQuone came to Kohler Mira 10 years ago after a 15 year career in the fire detection industry and brought with him an understanding of the use of digital technology in safety applications. During this time he led the development of their ground-breaking digital thermostatic mixing valve technology which, aside from introducing a high degree of temperature control, also introduced unique features to aid the control of water based pathogens. This technology is now on the third generation of development focusing on providing easier access to the management information recorded within the digital valve. Eoin has an HND in Electronic Engineering from De Montfort University and a BSc from the Open University. After spending the last 4 years working on the domestic side of the business he has recently come back to work on the Rada brand as the Senior Marketing Manager with a responsibility for the development of products for commercial applications.

Mike is a UK qualified Industrial Microbiologist who has been working as a Consultant in the field of Legionellosis Management and Control for the last 25 years with HYDROP E.C.S. (UK) of which he is a Senior Partner. He is currently the appointed Legionella Consultant for a large number of the NHS Trusts and some of the UK's larger companies/organisations including British Aerospace, a large number Local Authorities, Defence Estates, Universities etc. Mike is a member of various Legionellosis Management and Control Steering Committees, National Health Service Strategic Committees and other advisory bodies. For the last 8 years, Mike has, been appointed as principal advisor to the Cyprus Ministry of Health for the preparation and implementation of the Legislation and Guidance locally. Mike has acted as principal investigation officer on a number of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks and suspected outbreaks.
