MEDICAL GASES SEMINAR

Wednesday, 21st November 2001

Conference Centre, Wrightington Hospital, Wigan.

Question: What do hand cream, the colour blue, HTM, Pin Indexes and Quality Control have in common?

Answer: A windy day at Wrightington where 38 delegates were entertained by speakers discussing MEDICAL GASES covering what current practices are, and should be, and what they are likely to be in the future.

IAN BEAUMONT, ALLISTAIR BALDOCKE (ESTATES TAG MEMBER), RICHARD MAYCOCK, IAN FRASER AND TREVOR COOK.

IAN FRASER, SENIOR ENGINEER, NHS ESTATES, discussed HTM 2022 and new European standards and how the HTM 2022 will change. Ian also provided an overview of the management arrangements that should be in place for the management of Medical Gases.

RICHARD MAYCOCK, TRAINING OFFICER from HILL-ROM MEDAES provided an overview of the Operational Policy required for the successful management operation of Medical Gases.

TREVOR COOK, INSTALLATIONS DIRECTOR, MIM Ltd., gave a real life scenario of the trials and tribulations of an installer and what can be learnt so as not to make the same mistakes.

DR JIM WATTS, CLINICAL DIRECTOR, DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHETICS, BURNLEY HEALTH CARE (after a night "on call") presented an informative and light-hearted look at the Clinical Aspects of Medical Gases, their development and reasons for use. With the use of an anaesthetic machine, he was able to explain (without sending the audience to sleep!) the delivery of gases to the patient during a clinical episode.

IAN BEAUMONT, DIRECTOR OF QUALITY CONTROL, STEPPING HILL HOSPITAL, STOCKPORT, provided a Quality Control aspect to the day and emphasised the importance of an independent QA service and the support available. Ian outlined some quite startling experiences of incidents concerning the quality of the Medical Gases.

MARK DAVIES, MEDICAL GASES ACCOUNT MANAGER, BOC GASES, presented the delivery of Medical Gases via bottles, covering identification, labelling, manual handling and other safety aspects including expiry dates. He described the new developments associated with bottled gas that BOC have introduced. BOC also provided a "stand" which was very ably "manned" throughout the seminar day by Sue Holden who demonstrated BOC's latest equipment.
